His will is not his own, and with the launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape comes a new era for the tentacle-faced merchant named Xur. For years, he wandered the Solar System, offering various weapons, armor, and more to Guardians weekly from Friday to Tuesday. These days, however, he's set up a more permanent shop within the Tower and completely overhauled his business model (which he had to do since Bungie did away with Legendary Shards as part of The Final Shape).
Follow our guide and overview to navigate this new version of Xur, including some tips on what to spend your Strange Coins on.
Overview of Xur Changes
advertisement
Previously, Xur dealt mostly with Legendary Shards for quite some time, but now his main form of currency is, once again, Strange Coins. These used to be obtainable through Dares of Eternity and Paraversal Hauls, but now they've been moved over as a reward in all ritual playlists, namely Vanguard, Crucible, Trials, Iron Banner, Gambit, and Onslaughtactivities.
Like Master Rahool, Xur has also picked up a reputation track with rewards. The only way to gain reputation with him is by spending Strange Coins.
After you spend 47 Strange Coins, you can participate in the "Loyalty Program of the Nine" by selecting the bottom-left "More Strange Offers" option. By claiming the Favor of the Nine, you get a Strange Favor buff that offers a chance for a bonus Strange Coin any time you earn one. These last for 11 days, and you can only acquire one per week. However, the buff stacks up to three times, and every time you acquire it again, it refreshes the duration.
In other words, the more you spend, the more you earn.
Where to Find Xur
Xur is now located at a permanent shop in The Tower within the Bazaar not far from Ikora and Hawthorne, inside the alleyway adjacent to the ramen shop. He will appear on the same regular schedule starting at the Friday refresh midday and ending with the weekly refresh Tuesdays around midday. (The specific time changes depending on Daylight Savings Time.)
Xur Inventory
Here's a rundown of everything new that Xur has to offer:
Multivarious Strange Offers
Just below Xur's reputation track, you'll find his standard wares.

- 2 Exotic Catalysts (71 Strange Coins): This pool includes random drops from before The Witch Queen and excludes any active catalysts associated with quests, campaigns, etc.
- 1 Piece of Exotic Armor for Each Class (41 Strange Coins): The classic Xur sale, there will be one piece of random Exotic armor for each subclass in the game.
- Wilcard Offer: The final slot in his standard wares will be wildcard, oftentimes a bundle of three engrams associated with a random playlist activity.
More Strange Offers
In the bottom-left subfolder labeled with an IX, you'll find More Strange Offers. These include the following:
- Favor of the Nine: After spending 37 coins, you can earn this stacking bonus that grants extra coins.
- Strange Material Offers: Xur has five slots where he offers various consumables and other materials that change in cost and quantity and are purchasable only once per week.
- Strange Gift (1 Strange Coin): This repeatable option offers a random item for the low cost of 1 Strange Coin.
Strange Gear Offers
The bottom-right subfolder marked by the symbol with two swords and a helmet, you'll find weapons and armor.
- Exotic Engram (23 Strange Coins): If you don't have any of the exotic weapons or armor pieces in this loot pool (which you can preview), then you'll receive one you do not currently own at random.
- Hawkmoon (23 Strange Coins): Each week will have a curated roll of the exotic hand cannon Hawkmoon, which has been the standard for Xur for quite some time.
- 3 Random Exotic Weapons (23 Strange Coins): Whereas Xur used to offer a single exotic weapon each week, that has been boosted to three total weekly. If a weapon pops up that you don't currently own, definitely consider purchasing it here.
- Legendary Weapon Engram (7 Strange Coins): A very affordable option, this grants a random weapon from Xur's vast loot pool with random perks.
- 7 Random Legendary Weapons (17 Strange Coins): Another standard for Xur that gets even more options these days, he offers seven random Legendary weapons with fixed perks each week. Sometimes they'll be amazing, sometimes they won't be worth it at all. Thankfully, you can see what you're getting before you make the purchase.
- Legendary Armor Engram (7 Strange Coins): Another affordable option, this one's less enticing than the weapon counterpart since the stat rolls on armor vary so much more.
- 5 Legendary Armor Engrams (17 Strange Coins): Each week, Xur will offer a full set of armor for your currently equipped class with randomly rolled stats that remain fixed for the duration of his active stay. The Class items are almost never worth it, but if there's a good roll on a piece of armor, it may be worth picking up.
How to Earn Strange Coins in The Final Shape Era
Ritual activites like Vanguard Ops, Crucible, and Gambit are the most reliable sources of Strange Coins, but you can also earn them from comparable playlist activities like Trials of Osiris, Iron Banner, and Onslaught. There's also a modest chance they'll drop from some campaign missions or chests.

If you're looking to farm for Strange Coins, pay attention to the weekly activity boosts for Vanguard, Gambit, and Crucible since those stack with all rewards. While not directly helpful, you might as well also focus on the Rituals Pathfinder to earn some extra XP along the way. Your main goal, however, should be to spend 47 Strange Coins with Xur to earn the Favor of the Nine buff each week. It lasts 11 days and stacks up to three times, and it resets that timer every time you add a stack. Once you get a full stack going, you might get four times the normal amount of Strange Coins from every activity.
What to Spend Strange Coins On
The answer to this question largely depends on your own needs. The Exotic Weapon Catalysts, however expensive, can be a huge boon. Many are random drops in the world loot pool, so players can go hundreds of hours without getting the one they want.
The weekly pieces of Exotic armor, Legendary Weapons, and Legendary Armor depend on the rolls. But if a good option pops up, they're the best overall value buy. The Strange Material Offers will often be worth the price, but those also vary wildly. The Wildcard Offer will undoubtedly offer up some great options sometimes.
Beyond all of that, if you ever find yourself in a position where you need to spend more coins just to get the Favor of the Nine, we suggest a Legendary Weapon Engram supplemented by a few Strange Gifts.
