New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Phil Hoad Guardian Amid the dumper-truck of post-Covid lockdown-inspired films, very few take disease and pandemics themselves as their central focus. So John Rosman’s stripped-back but effective debut is a sobering flashback to those incubative early days. Rated: 3/5 May 29, 2024 Full Review New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Lovers of hard-core horror with elements of science fiction and allusions to body horror, rejoice. [Full review in Spanish] May 7, 2024 Full Review New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting It’s not just the complexities of its characters that are compelling, but Rosman’s ability to drop narrative bombs that cataclysmically alter the genre and narrative direction. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 10, 2023 Full Review New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Noah Berlatsky Everything is Horrible (Substack) It’s not a must see. But it’s determination to explore its new skin, with all its wounds, is worth watching if you are interested in zombies, disability, or their ugly, possibly enlightening intersection. Oct 4, 2024 Full Review New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Ygraine Hackett-Cantabrana What a Scream Podcast ... isn’t anything wildly invigorating in the pandemic subgenre of horror, character study of a patient zero and the ailing woman tasked to hunt her down does vastly set it apart from its contemporaries. Rated: 4/5 Sep 3, 2024 Full Review New Life (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Aaron Murray Loud and Clear Reviews New Life is a terrific directorial debut from John Rosman with outstanding performances and a narrative that grips you from the start and never lets go. Audience Member I can understand why critics can praise it but was disappointed. Although I overall think it’s a good film, in this day and age it would be a great pilot to a series. Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler As a zombie movie fan I wish there would have been more of that, they just tell you that other people are quarantined. Also, no ‘zombie’ ever converts another person to one. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Will P This film breathes nothing but death into the genre. The concept is straight out of 28 Days Later but the execution is like an even more boring, joyless Into The Wild. Imagine Christopher McCandless killing everyone he met with a virus, in a really boring way. That's the film. God, it's boring. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Julian V Must see, incredible. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review TI H NEW LIFE is the hope-filled title of a horror film that plays out as a manhunt, rather, "womanhunt." We don’t know why the authority figure, called the “fixer,” is chasing the young woman. Is the girl just trying to see the world. . .without money, food, water, or winter clothing? Is she a criminal? Is she escaping a bad relationship? Do the two know each other? The story is too well-directed to simply dump that information on us in Act I. Such exposition would have made this very simple plot feel overlong. The horror element of the story, which is not supernatural, by the way, is one we know all too well, and it relies on grotesque imagery to repulse us. That sin, combined with an unnecessary jump scare and a denouement that didn’t quite work, kept this from being a five-star movie. The film succeeds, however, as an emotional drama, supported by fine acting and visceral suspense. It’s worth your time. //////////////// Again, about the ending. . .I can’t spoil it for you by explaining why it troubled me other than to say it implied that our two main characters share an identical trait. The implication is too much for me to swallow. That being said, as far as horror films go, this one is far superior to most of the films I’ve watched during this Halloween season. It leaves us with the troubled feeling that “New Life” might apply to more people than just our two principal characters.
